The Biophilia Thesis

I travelled regularly as a child. Every holiday, every long weekend, every day was an adventure. My parents weren't afraid of packing their three children into a car and leaving our suburban life behind... going anywhere, everywhere. My world view was a car window frame. I was always peering inquisitively out of windows. From car windows to building windows to tent windows into worlds unknown or new to me, always in nature. Since a young age, I romanticized everything. Dramatized everything. Felt everything. I lived for those days, leaving behind a world of routine and immersing myself in nature, where everything was slow and circular. I've always felt more at home walking barefoot in dry riverbeds, collecting grasses and feeling the sun on my face. I've always felt happier swimming in the ocean, leaving behind the buzz and the lights, my hair curling naturally from the salt and humidity from a sea breeze.

Biophilia simply means love of nature. Bio - nature, philia - love. When I heard this word for the first time it evoked such emotion, such excitement. It is exactly what I want my brand to symbolize. Love. You can be in the darkest of times, but the memory of love can get you through. Love for people, love for places, love for things. I feel completely at peace with myself in nature. I feel completely present in nature. I feel moved in nature.

Biophilia jewellery aims to re-create this feeling of love. When you buy a piece of jewellery, there is always a story and a memory attached. You would never buy something you don't love. You would never buy something that doesn't mean something to you. Jewellery tells the most beautiful stories because it lasts, it shines, it's moulded into the shapes of our lives. I want people to hold on to a moment of love forever with my jewellery. If I have done that, then I have succeeded.
